A Baltimore Clipper Build, this will take awhile..

I bow in the presence of greatness! :notworthy :notworthy :notworthy :notworthy :notworthy

I have two ships to rig; I'm not looking forward to it, but I really should buckle down and get them done.

That was a brilliant idea for doing the belaying pin ropes; they look so extremely realistic! That is simply genius!

Thanks for looking guys :v

I didn't come up with the separate looped line technique, ain't smart enough, I saw it being used thumbing through a book years ago and it stuck in my memory. Modelers are great problem solvers! :good:

Trying hard not to get bit by the bug to attempt something like this.

Yesterday I was in my local Hobby Town, and on their clearance table was a Model Shipways Armed Virginal Sloop. Was tagged at $169.99 but it was 35% off, which would make it $110.00. Been trying to decide if I want to go back and put it on layaway or just walk away, haha.

That's a good looking ship Adam, At 1/4"= 1' it's a decent size model too. I'm building the Chasseur to 5/32 = 1', smaller than I would prefer. I'm thinking of building an admiralty (no masts) model of the SWIFT. At 1/2"=1',it would build into an impressive sized hull. I started the Chasseur using 1.5 mag glasses, I'm up to 2.75 nearing the end of the build! :geek

Yea, it looks like a pretty nice kit, and from what I've seen from Googling it online, its a decent kit for someone w/ no experience building a wood ship model. I cant tell whether the kit includes sails or not, and I don't know whether that's a good thing or not, haha. I've seen a few images of this kit w/ sails, so they either do come in the kit, or they are available separately, and I really like the look of it w/ sails.

I've decided that I'm going to keep an eye on the kit, to see whether it sells or not, and then hopefully in a few weeks I'll have the money to at least put it on layaway at the hobby shop. Found out they want 25% down, and then it has to be paid off in 60 days. Right now I just don't have the money to spare to put it on layaway. The way I look at it, if its still there when I can afford it, then great. If its not there, then it's not a big deal.

I hear ya Adam. The kit may come with patterns for the sails. Keep in mind the rigging plan for a ship with sails set is different than one without. The amount of rigging with sails added will greatly increase. there will be buntlines, clews, tack lines etc. The Chasseur's rigging is for a ship with sails removed and looks quite a bit different than it would with the sails, which is why some of the belaying pins don't have lines running to them. The material most used for the sails is Egyptian cotton.

Admiralty Model? I get no mast but what's the deal with that?

Back in the day a group of Admirals, and or the king, if the country had one, would approve the building of a new ship based on a scale model of the design. Model shipwrights would build the hulls that were extremely detailed which would let the "brass" get a good idea of what the hull shape, gun placement, and deck arrangement would look like. The masting for a ship, whether it was to be rigged as a Schooner, Sloop, Brig etc. didn't change much so adding rigging to these models wasn't important.
once a model was approved to build full scale the ship builders could take the measurements directly from the model.

hmm...that may be the build for me then... :coolio

Thanks Tim. :good:

Gorgeous build, ive always wanted to try one.

I need more info on how you laid and stained the deck. I have to replace a plastic one with wood and i could use some guidance!

Hi Scrodes and thank you! Sorry for being so late in answering you question. You've probably got that project built and moved on by now
I did the deck planking for this solid hull by cutting the planks and glueing them to a 1/32 thick sub deck (the planks are also 1/32 thick) and glueing the assembly the hull. The planks are made of basswood, this wood doesn't take stain very pretty so after a golden oak stain was applied I masked individual planks and rubbed dry pigments into the wood. repeating this mask and pigment process for all the planks varying the colors. when I thought the deck looked good I clear coated it with a dull sheen.

Well, I've come to the end of this build :good:
Here's some finished pics. I made the case for the Chasseur at a friend's wood shop. I designed it so the entire case lifts off the base for easy access. The pic is without the glass but y'all know what glass looks like :) Thanks for all the compliments and interest in this build!!

A true thing of beauty Tim, you should be very proud.

I'm pretty fearless when it comes to modeling, but wooden ship kits scare me...
