During WWI, that rifle was known as the Karabiner 98az. The original K98a was in production from 1899-1908. It was issued to artillery, cavalry and support troops but was never really successful. In 1908, the K98az was introduced featuring the smaller bayonet receiver, the "L" shaped stacking rod near the muzzle and the turned down bolt handle and associated recess in the stock. It was issued to cavalry, mountain and "established" Stormtroop units. Divisional Assault units retained the standard issue Gewehr 98.

In 1923 the K98b was introduced. It wasn't a true carbine being an upgraded Gewehr 98 designated as a carbine to meet requirements of the Treaty of Versailles. At this time the K98az designation was changed to K98a.
