Re: Battleships...... Bismarck, & Tirpitz.....

I need to suck in my gut and build a quality ship, my 1/426 Arizona doesn't count- I'll need a 40 buck detail set to bring that old kit out from the 50's. saw- saw- saw- saw- saw- saw- saw ad infinium = no fun.

It's sad that most of these King Battleships now rest at the bottom of the sea. Been on the North Carolina in Wilmington- that's a nice sized ship that's still floating!

Re: Battleships...... Bismarck, & Tirpitz.....

Thanks for posting this Mike. I have a question though. Do you have any information on the color call-outs. Especially for the Bismarck during her final days. My understanding is that the hull was a darker gray than the super structure and that the all horizontal surfaces that were not wood were even darker than the hull.

Thanks,

Joe

Re: Battleships...... Bismarck, & Tirpitz.....

Found this documentry on You Tube.Interesting stuff!

Seems the British made a big effort to knock-out the Tirpitz!

[thought it would fit right in with your great reference,Mike] (y)

I might even try to do a model on one of these ships,....someday.

Greetings,Ron.

Greetings Joe;

The Bismarck wore several different paint schemes is her incredible, but
short life span.

When the Bismarck & the Prinz Eugen did there work-up in the Baltic sea,
Spring 1941 she wore a striped paint scheme.

Bismarck in the Spring of 1941.

Bismarck's last North Atlantic Operation.

The Bismarck and Prinz Eugen were repainted in what looks like Dark Sea Gray hull
and a med. gray superstructure. It appears the large Nazi flags on the
bow, and stern where repainted gray and white/possibly black, and white.

*** Note... Historions have been argueing about the final colors of the Bismarck
for years. ***

Re: Battleships...... Bismarck, & Tirpitz.....

Thanks Mike. I had the same impression that historians still fight over the right paint scheme at the end of her career. So I can paint the Bismarck any color I want, as long as it is gray :D

There are so many different accounts about Bismarck's final color scheme. The reference I have from Model Warship Publishing even states that it was almost impossible to get a consensus from the survivors. The very men who had that ship shot out from under them couldn't even agree...

Thanks for sharing all of this. I actually dug out my Revell 1/350 Bismarck and was getting ready to start a thread.

Re: Battleships...... Bismarck, & Tirpitz.....

No problemo. I can't think of another ship that had more color/camo scheme changes in such a short service life. It's like every time they got pierside, they changed it up again.
