PART 4 - THE CAPTURE OF U-505 (Type IXC -Revell #05114 1/72) 25th Jan update.

The image below is a classic and immediately recognisable as the capture of U-505 on the 4th June 1944, near Cape Verde - 10 volcanic Islands off the West coast of Northern Africa.

BACKGROUND
The action above came about when the 'Hunter-Killer' group, Task Group 22.3, led by the USS Guadalcanal (an Escort aircraft carrier) and 5 additional escort destroyers, made their way out from Norfolk in mid May 1944 to the area in question, looking for U-Boats [based on decrypted German messages] that were operating in the area. On the 4th June they made an extremely close sonar contact with U-505, near to one of the destroyers. Planes were launched from the carrier to intercept and act as spotters, while the target was engaged by the destroyer Chatelain. The sub sustained multiple damage and the captain ordered the sub to surface and crew to abandon ship.

The crew set charges and abandoned the sub but it did not sink immediately, as it was not scuttled with only a few valves opened and the engines left running. The sub continued along the surface in a slow circle with a damaged rudder and was quickly intercepted by US Navy crew from another destroyer in the group. They closed the valves, disarmed the charges and stopped the sub from completely sinking.

U-505
U-505 was an early war Type 9C(long range sub), built in 1941 during the early part of the war, when the 'slotted deck' configuration and early small tower were standard features. The U-boat was upgraded in 1943 to a Turm 2 conning tower while in port for repair and further upgrades. It was then upgraded again to a Turm 4 configuration(without leaving) in May - July, before going out on their next patrol. The deck gun was removed at this time and 2 x twin 20 mm guns added to the upper rear platform and 1x quad 20 mm to the lower. This configuration was upgraded again in late 1943 -early '44, when the quad 20 mm was replaced with a single 37 mm. A snorkel was still not installed and probably would have been after patrol 12, if the boat had returned.
(see excerpt from UBOAT .NET page below)
505 details.jpg

U-505 was on it's 12th patrol and had been an unlucky boat, with many technical failures returning them to port, mainly due to sabotage but some as major damage, as in a Hudson sub hunter aircraft in November 1942, while on its 4th patrol.
While on their tenth patrol the Captain committed suicide. All in all a bit of a cursed boat it seems.

THE DIORAMA/ MODEL
20201012_200359.jpg

The main photo is just what a diorama maker is looking for in submarine modelling, with the drama and detail all there.
The real challenge for this one will be creating an ocean surface with semi transparent areas close to the hull and blending these with the deeper ocean with no depth, further out.
Of course the late, great diorama modeler, Lewis Pruneau' modeled this exact scene in 1/35 scale back in the day and it has always been a favourite classic dio for me. It was his diorama that inspired me to create my own Type 7C/41 dio in 1/72 scale (the Last Patrol), some 10 years ago now. So in a way, I suppose this will be a kind of tribute to him, from me, for the great models he created and inspired in others.
Please follow and enjoy the build from here' as I will be incorporating lessons learned in my earlier diorama' while incorporating some new ideas that I have formulated since then. There is also a 'ton' of PE and figures that are available now that did not exist 10 years ago.......as well as the kit itself.
I will be using the following :
  • Pontos 9C upgrade set
  • CMK US Navy figure sets
  • Shapeways 3D printed USN surf boat
  • Blue foam sheets (30cm x 60cm x 3cm, 30cm x 60cm x 5cm)
  • Various new water products from AK.
  • Correct tower and water line decal sets from AMP.

Fantastic work Ian. Just loving this build. I saw this kit at a store down the road a ways and it and the Gato keep calling my name. So far though I've held out against temptation. You make that harder to do.
James
Hey James, thank you, grab that U-505 kit while you can, they have been out of production for nearly 10 years and are very hard to get. It has taken me over 2 years to get 2 more of those kits for this project, as one appears on Ebay every year or so if your lucky. There are none left online or in any local shops down here.
The beauty of the 505 version is that you can use it for all the mid war 'slotted deck' or 'planked deck' versions, by mixing it with different brass decks from RC subs and armament from CMK or Griffon.

The interesting thing with mid war boats is that they have a number of variations in the tower configurations, tower guns, decks (after late 1943) and even the 105mm deck gun was still carried by some boats with the larger tower as late as 1944.
A good example is U-155, that is on my list - its an earlier 'slotted deck' boat with the larger tower but has retained the 105mm on the deck but still has a quad flak on the lower platform with 2x twin 20mm on the upper. The deck has the offset curved access hatch just in front of the 105mm. This is peculiar to only a small series of type 9's, one production group being U-154-156. RC Subs has the brass deck for U-154 which can be used for the other 2 as well.

I completed the foam base cavity for the depth work on the sub, digging out a bit more around the inner edge and near the hydoplanes at the front. I trimmed- up some pieces at the back to fit the melamine board base with my new foam cutter.

Currently working out my measurements and drawings for a black perspex surround. The next stage will be applying a epoxy safe covering over the foam and intergrating that with the perspex when it is made. I also need to trim more off the underneath rear of the model so that I can get it to sit lower enough as I don't want to add more foam (as this will mean more resin).

Nearly ready to move on to stage 3 with my this dio. My perspex box is made(the tape around the base is just on there to protect the black perspex) and I have fitted my foam ocean base. I just need to do a little more work on the CTower details and I will start the model clay work on the ocean base.
stage 1 - build the sub
stage 2 - work out the base and build it and have a perspex box made.
stage 3 - create the base clay and cover the foam base to protect it from the epoxy resin water.
stage 4 - build the figures and surf boat.
stage 5 - paint the uboat and the foam base
stage 6 - attach the uboat to the base, add the figures and final wires and mooring /tow lines.
stage 7 - add the resin and water effects.
stage 8 - design name plaque and attach this and photos to the base sides.

Time for an update................
I finally finished the Conning Tower details but still need to fix the Port side join seam between the two levels. The PE on the tower was very frustrating and I learnt some better ways to approach this part of the model which will speed me up on the next one. For instance, just the fins on the twin 20mm base mounts took a whole afternoon. :silly::soldier
The 'Bali' radar on the tower was a nightmare. My first attempt using the Pontos PE just failed as it was overly complicated and after a whole day I just gave up. I turned to my other version in the RC Subs set and this was way simpler and finished it in 20mins. :ph:
I constructed the tower and railings too early, having to work around these details to attach the PE - a big mistake. For the next 9C I will attach the handles and wire mesh etc while the parts are seperate.
The Flag pole mounts alone had so many parts that assembly took me 4 hours. U-505 had the mounts but no pole.
I cut up the edges of the Pontos wooden decking and trimmed them for the seats, adding them on top of the plastic base shapes.
Another note is that I did not use the PE shield provided for the 37mm gun as I compared it to photos and it looked right. The PE actually looked a little thin, which came up a few times, especially with the handrails.

There were many mods on this tower such as:

- all PE parts are from the Pontos 9C set or the RC Subs U-505 set.
- completely replacing the wooden panelling on the inner tower sides.
- replaced the binocular mount with the CMK after market part.
- filling and replacing the molded twin AA frame supports on the top level Wintergarten floor. These also needed to be completely repostioned, as U-505 had these set at opposing angles, unlike other later boats.
- modifed the front windbreak cowling to make it damaged.
- added all the battle damaged matched to the actual surviving sub photos.
- added the missing drainage holes in the periscope housing base and adding the circular scoop cut-out at the bottom of the base.
- added a thin strip around the front of the tower above the splash guard (which was missing).
- cut and reposition the 37mm gun shield to a closed position.
- a major clean-up of the top rear railing on the lower gun platform which needed a lot of work to thin out and fill the rough detail and flash.

I have also added a complete coating of white glue over the foam to seal it and needed to wait for it to dry for about a week in the thicker areas.

Enjoy.......next up is the putty on the foam.

This is just spectacular! You guys build so clean. I feel like setting my bars, like building cleaner, one at a time is making me better.
Thanks Greg, I try to do the PE as clean as possible but I do clean-ups on the PE where I can, sanding off excess glue etc.

Thanks MP :). I hate PE but agree that it is worth it in the end.
NICE JOB!
I'm using the Pontos set on the 350 Missouri, but much of it is so fine and difficult I simply can't apply it, so it winds up in the trash. What I am able to use though, sure is an improvement over the moulded in detail for sure.

Being slobbered all over may not damage an Unterseeboat. I will try not to drool on her too much.
This is just absolutely STUNNING! :tens:
Your ability to visualize "What could be" with a model kit and the stories model tell consistently astounds me!

I know what you mean. Pontos go a bit overboard in 1/72, so i can imagine the nightmare of 1/350.
