Daytona 1957 Ford Fairlane

Yeah but you're like...Bob Letterman...

Just do it huh...seems like that's been ringing in my ear lately.

Oh ratfarts...I got the last two parts of the Mustang done so WTF! Hood up! :mpup

Just remember, it's Dad's fault!

I've not given a report on the Ford Fairlane in a while because well, the kit really sucks and I've struggled with it.

While at the local Bait, Tackle, Beer and (only on Wednesdays) Cheeseburger joint, enjoying our cheeseburgers outside under the aluminum awning car port and picknick table, what do I see pull up behind me?

Yes, that's a 1957 Ford Fairlane in the exact same colors as the Fireball Roberts Ford Fairlane of 1957 Daytona 500. (BTW, the owner had a price tag of $21,500 on the car :gogo )

This got me thinking what can I do to get this kit back up and running. Parts were missing from the first kit, I've been on the look out for another but have not found one.

So then, I decided to swing up the local show at Simpsonville today to have a look around. I knew our LHS up there was emptying his shelves and clearing stock, I wanted to look one last time what we've been looking at for years. (He's going to restock new stuff!) I kept my eye peeled for anything, and specifically, this Ford Fairlane, low and behold...

$12.00 it's worth another shot at this thing.

So I chopped off the roof again and started test fitting stuff.

Now to figure out how to paint it...and git'er done by end of June.

Cool stuff. Whats wrong with the kit Bob? Looks like its comming together. The real deal looks very cool.
James

Well the first kit was missing several key parts...like the dash board. Fit is pretty bad on it also, I'm being more aggressive about the fit on this body. Not going to worry about the engine, This will be ready to roll.

Thanks Dad, I really think this color is a bit bright for the Berkshire Green Ford offered in 57 but, I can't find a reliable source for it on the web. One website offers it but the email I got back from him was less than encouraging on delivery.

So now, do I chrome it, mask it and paint the colors or paint the colors and then chrome?? I'll use my first attempt as my test bed. :mpup

What does "Berkshire Green" look like? Do you have a color chip. Maybe I can come up with a mix that can come close.

No, not really, the colors back then were quite gaudy!

Well, if it was me, I would buy some Bare Metal foil, one chrome, one gold. Then I would affix the gold foil to the interior patterned area, then chrome the trim around it along with the remainder of chrome areas, bumpers, windshield frame and so on. That was the way the real thing was. Bare Metal foil is a very useful thing when modeling cars, and it's relatively inexpensive!

BTW, most 57 Fords were two toned, in other words, were painted with the color in some areas and white in others, but you probably know that.

Terry,

Here is a link to a color chip.

Bob, I wouldn't worry about the color that much. But, that's just me.

Thanks Bob! Looks like the color is a little darker. I'll see what I can come up with.

Thanks for the input guys,

For ref, here's the color in the real world

Last week and

50 some odd years ago.

And here's Grabber Green from the rattle can.

I think the real color is a bit darker but i'm with Dad on this. Unless someone has a ready mix that I can actually buy (and not just listed on a website without a price) I think I'll stick with the Grabber Green.

MP,

If you decide to repaint. Here is a color chart for Testor's spray cans. The plain old Gloss green looks pretty close.

If you want to airbrush it, these guys should have the color...

It looks almost like a forrest green. Have you looked at the Vallejo chart to see if there is a match? Cool looking car though.
James

Checked my paint stash and low and behold I had Testors "Green", flat. I sprayed it on the test mule and WHAM. looks good to me! I'll get a shot of it in the morning and see what you guys think.

Thanks for all y'all help!

I'm not sure, but that looks considerably lighter than the color in the pictures. I'd find a way to add some black or darker green to the base color to get it closer, But thats just my opinion.
