TOPIC: Hakko FX888D Soldering Station

Hakko FX888D Soldering Station 07 Dec 2017 17:00 #1

HAKKO FX888D Intro

Over the years I have been back and forth over getting a resistance soldering station but I just could not pull the trigger on $400+ for something I may not use that often.

Biggest problem I have had with soldering is the heat and the tip. Most of our soldering irons we get a the local shops are not made for detail and small application, just utilitarian in nature. The big Waller gun I have heats up nice but it's heavy and has limited selections of tips. The smaller irons are generally 25-35 watt, takes a while for them to heat up and the tips are still rather big.

Allow me to introduce you to my new Hakko FX 888D BY (Blue and Yellow) soldering station, they have a silver model also.

Read the technical info about the FX888D here. I'll not get into all this because it's lost on me, I just need heat!

I'll be testing this and my soldering skills on the frame for the 109 soon.

Please feel free to correct me about any of the soldering statements I made here. I don't pretend to be a solder expert.

Short of an American Beauty, this is the best one I've come across. I use it every few days, it heats up so quickly, soldering can be something you do on the fly without a lot of prep.

May take a bit to wrap your head around the settings, or at least remember what they are, but otherwise it's a solid unit.

We both arrived at the same conclusion, either $400 or this.

I forgot, you can find the other tips (must be about 20 different ones) for a few bucks each if you hunt around. Genuine Hakko too.

Theres also a non toxic liquid flux I've found that works great with this and silver solder.

65 watts! Man, you can burn up some serious 7018 and 6025 with that.

Jeffery I looked over the AB line and didn't really see one that offered what this has. I don't see any digital units from them.

Paul, what are you talkin' about?

I meant the resistance unit. That would be first choice, but for a traditional iron type, Hakko is the way to go.
