The pens at Saint Nazair are open to the public just park your car behind it and walk in ,they took out some of the concrete walls at rear of the bunker (must have been some BIG saws!).in the concret lock on the other side of the basin is a smal museum with a post war french submarine.
You also can get on the roof of the pens and lock .
I post the pics at random it is to much to sort them out :D

Sadly i have lost a lot of pics of the trip.

Great pics, thanks for taking the time to post them.

I seem to remember reading a while back that due to the construction, there's no way to get rid of them, they can't be dismantled or demolished in any economically feasible way. Wasn't one converted into a shopping mall or apartments of something?

Any chance that you were researching a new project? I'd love to see you tackle a 1/72 sub pen... :D

Piet,

I'm in the middle of the book 'Target Tirpitz' (I'm building a RC X-craft and they were used against the Tirpitz) and last night I was reading about the raid on St Nazaire. It was the only dry dock in France large enough to handle the Tirpitz and Churchill was terrified of it arriving there so he ordered the raid, basically a suicide mission.

(Shhhh, don't tell how it turns out. :grin)

It's a real treat to be able to open up these photos as I read, thanks again.

I'll echo everyone else and say thank you for posting those excellent pics. Somewhere I would love to go and wander around :)

These pics are most appreciated. We recently did a war game re-enactment of the raid on St. Nazaire a few months back, seeing these pics just makes the whole experience come alive that much more. Thanks for posting these.
