s.F.H 18 15cm Walkaround

This is the 15cm s.F.H 18 located on the grounds of the Calcasieu Parish courthouse in Lake Charles, Louisiana. The cannon was captured at the Battle of the Bulge and given to the citizens of Calcasieu parish to replace the WWI German field piece that was donated to the call for scrap iron by the US government during WWII. This was common practice during the war years. In the book 'Torpedoes in the Gulf: Galveston and the U-Boats, 1942-1943' it is told that the citizens were so excited to donate to the scrap iron drive that they were willing to donate the city's Civil War cannons. The federal government had to step in and classify these cannons as 'historic' and not obsolete and so the Civil War cannons were spared.

Calcasieu Parish's 15cm s.F.H 18 do show wear and tear from decades of neglect. An effort was made by myself and my department, we work for the parish, to stop the decaying process and preserve what is left.
