F-102 Delta Dagger in the Delta

Okay people, here is my submission for this campaign.

I'll be doing the Meng 1/72 scale F-102 Delta Dagger. The obligatory Time-stamped pic:

The open box with instruction sheet:

This will be the scheme I'll be completing this plane in:

Stay tuned, more to come....

I started an Encore/Monogram F-102 many moons ago that is languishing on the shelf of doom.

Not to rain on the parade, but the 497[sup]th[/sup] only operated the Dagger while they were stationed in Spain 1960-1964. They converted to F-4's before deploying to Vietnam in 1965.

Here is F-102A-60-CO 56-1136's service record:

*USAF 48th FIS (US ADC).
*USAF 82nd FIS (US ADC).
*1960: USAF 497th FIS (Spain).
*1964: USAF 32nd FIS (Netherlands).
*1965-70: USAF 496th FIS (Germany).
*1971-74: California ANG 194th FIS.
*5/1974: Put into storage at the AMARC bone yard.
*11/1980: Converted to PQM-102B as "805".
*1/12/1981: Shot down over the Gulf of Mexico in a missile test flight from Tyndall AFB, FL.

I have seen a picture of 56-1136 in SEA cam on the flight line with two Calif ANG F-102's in ADC Grey. The only difference being that in the picture it has "17" on the tail vice "18".

Cheers,
Rich

I love the 102 and 106, they remind me of Mirage III's From what I have seen on documentaries a flight of them escorted LBJ into Vietnam when he went for a visit.

According to Wiki the 509th FIS was in Vietnam with SEA camo 102s. Maybe you can find some decals for them, or even make some.

Thanks guys for the great comments. I had known that some SEA camouflaged Daggers had gone to the 'Nam for 'evaluation' in a combat setting. I will try to get some suitable decals to fit this. It will be a bit tough for me as I don't think anyone did those decals for this plane in 1/72 scale.

Terry, I haven't looked it over much but it is a Meng kit so expectations are high. I'll keep you posted.

One thing to watch out for on the decal sheets is whether they are for the Case X or XX wing. Aircraft with a serial number of 56-1137 and up were Case XX. The early F-102's were deployed to Thailand in there standard ADC Grey.

Caracal sheet CD72009 has a SEA camouflaged Case X aircraft, but it seems to be sold out everywhere.

Print Scale sheet 72-147 has an ADC Grey Case X aircraft deployed for Op Water Glass.

Cheers,
Rich

Thanks for the great info guys. Rich, it looks like those decals are just what I need. Now if I can get paid; I can arrange to get those. Thanks for the link. At least I can get started on this while waiting for them.

Thanks Luiz. I hope to do this one justice.

Bob, no I haven't. It's been a scary prospect for me; most of all because I'm not sure I'd get the sizing right. Otherwise, it might be something I'd consider doing since I have several ideas I want to do that nobody does decals for.

Thanks again for the assists guys. Stay tuned, more to come.

While in Labrador on the DEW line the 59th FIS was there and so was I with the F-102 1964-1965. :eek:hyeah

That is awesome Tony, I'm always glad to hear of someone who was working around these aircraft.

Stay tuned, pics forthcoming.

Okay, here's my latest progress on this model. I am trying to accelerate the building process while maintaining the basics as best I can.

I started out with getting the cockpit done on the F-102:

After that came the engine exhaust:

While that was drying, I started the wing sub-assembly:

After that, I thought, why not? and added the intakes to the sides of the fuselage:

After all, the more sub-assemblies I can do ahead of time the faster this thing goes.

That's all I got on this so far. Hopefully I'll be able to progress soon. Meanwhile, stay tuned for more, comments are welcome. Thanks for looking in.
